An Honest Take on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady
A candid review of a four-night Scarlet Lady cruise from Miami, including the ship, food, Key West, Bimini, and interior cabins.
I just got back from a four-night run on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady: Miami to Key West to Bimini, with one sea day before returning to Miami. If you are considering a short adults-only cruise, here is the real rundown—the good, the not-so-good, and the details I would want to know before booking.
The ship itself
Scarlet Lady is beautiful. It is genuinely one of the better-designed ships I have sailed on, and it rarely feels crowded. That is saying something, because there are plenty of cozy little spaces tucked around the ship where you can settle in, have a drink, read, or simply take a quiet break.
You do not feel as though you are constantly competing for a chair. The layout gives you options, which makes a short cruise feel more relaxed from the start.
The Social Lounge is the hub for much of the lively fun: shuffleboard, trivia, and even shuffleboard tournaments that are genuinely entertaining to play and watch. It can get loud, but the hosts do a great job pulling everyone in and keeping the energy high.
My favorite quiet spot on Scarlet Lady
The Deck 7 solarium was my favorite spot on the entire ship. There is no pool there—just a bar, loungers, and chairs—and unless an event is happening, it stays pleasantly quiet.
Most of the action pools up on the main pool deck, so Deck 7 becomes a welcome escape when you want a calmer place to recharge. I also appreciated that the crew cleared abandoned items, so loungers were not “saved” all day while sitting empty.
The food is a standout
The food was excellent across the board. Honestly, every dining venue on Scarlet Lady would likely be considered specialty dining on many other cruise lines. There is a thoughtful mix of new things to try alongside familiar steakhouse and seafood favorites.
The Galley is the main open-seating, grab-and-go option, set up more like a food hall than a traditional cruise buffet. You can find burgers and fries at one station, udon at another, sushi bento boxes, fresh fruit, and more. Everything we tried ranged from very good to excellent.
One small detail made a bigger impression than I expected: breakfast. I am not usually a fan of buffet eggs because they tend to be cold and dry. Virgin handles them differently, bringing out small batches every few minutes so they stay hot and fresh. The same was true for pancakes and French toast.
They also put out fruit boxes at breakfast with berries and tropical fruit. Grabbing a handful of berries became a daily habit and was a great addition to whatever else we were eating that morning.
Key West: easy, walkable, and worth the stop
Key West was a great port day. We simply walked into town and wandered, ducking into whichever shops or watering holes looked interesting. We were the only ship in port that day, and that made a real difference in how relaxed the experience felt.
The highlight was the butterfly sanctuary. There were more butterflies in one place than I have seen in any similar exhibit. If you go, get there early. Space inside is limited, and they do not rush people through, so the line builds quickly later in the day.
For travelers who enjoy exploring independently, Key West is an easy port to enjoy without overplanning. Comfortable shoes, a loose plan, and a little curiosity go a long way.
Bimini: beautiful beach, frustrating transportation
Bimini was the one rough patch of the itinerary, and this is where I would set expectations before booking. The island was lovely, but transportation was the only real frustration of the entire cruise. I cannot say whether it was a one-day issue or a recurring problem, but it is worth knowing about.
Virgin’s beach is not the only destination on the island. Other hotels sit along the route before you reach Virgin’s property, and the trams did not seem to run nearly often enough. When we headed out in the morning, several hundred people were waiting ahead of us.
Each tram holds around 50 people, and only about three appeared to be in rotation. We ended up walking—about 1.7 miles, flat and pretty. In the time it took us to walk, we saw only two trams pass by.
Once you arrive, the beach itself is beautiful. The layout is great, the food is excellent, and it is an enjoyable place to spend the day. A few things to keep in mind:
- The pools are not heated, even when the weather is cooler.
- We saw Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish scattered along the beach, so keep an eye out near the water.
- The return tram experience was difficult too. We were told trams would arrive every five to ten minutes, but we waited more than 20 minutes.
- The waiting areas were poorly marked, and when a tram finally arrived, boarding became a bit of a free-for-all.
My advice: build in extra time for transportation, and wear shoes you would be comfortable walking in if the line is long. The beach is worth seeing, but the logistics may require patience.
The interior cabin surprised me
We booked an interior room for the first time on any cruise, figuring a short sailing was a low-risk way to test it. It more than delivered.
The room made smart, creative use of storage space and never felt cramped. With no windows, it stayed pitch black and quiet overnight, which meant we slept incredibly well every night.
For a longer cruise, I would choose a balcony without hesitation. But for a long weekend or a quick Miami getaway, an interior cabin was a genuinely great value and a choice I would make again.
Bottom line: would I recommend Scarlet Lady?
Absolutely. If you are considering a short Virgin Voyages sailing from Miami, I would recommend Scarlet Lady without hesitation. The ship, the food, and Key West all overdelivered.
Just go in knowing that the Bimini day had transportation headaches during our visit. Budget extra time, bring a good pair of walking shoes, and keep your expectations flexible for that part of the itinerary.
If you want help deciding whether Virgin Voyages is the right fit for your travel style—or comparing this itinerary with another cruise option—I would be happy to help you plan the details.
